Extreme Weather Conditions

Year Round Restrictions

Delta will not accept animals as checked baggage but may ship as cargo during extreme weather if at any point during the animal's trip the temperature is forecast to be:

Below Above

10° Fahrenheit (-12°C)

75° Fahrenheit (21.1°C) for for snub- or pug-nosed dogs and cats. See chart below.

85° Fahrenheit (29.4°C) for all other breeds.

Pets are accepted to/from Anchorage, Alaska when temperatures are forecast below 10° Fahrenheit.

Delta reserves the right to refuse live animals as checked baggage and as cargo if the animal's health is in question and/or if the health of the animal may be jeopardized by extreme conditions.

Make advance arrangements

When booking a flight on which you will bring your pet, please advise us. Be sure to reconfirm 24 to 48 hours before departure that you will be bringing your pet.

Please note that advance arrangements are not guarantees that your animal will travel on a specific flight. To be as humane as possible, airlines reserve the right to refuse to transport an animal for reasons like illness, poor kenneling, or extreme temperatures at origin, transfer, or destination airports. Airlines have the right to refuse carriage of any animal that demonstrates aggressive and/or violent behavior.

Hot and Cold Weather Restrictions

When runway temperatures are above 84 degrees at the departure airport the airline may refuse to board the pet in the cargo (checked baggage) section of the aircraft. When the weather is very cold with a runway temperature below 45 degrees at the time of departure the airline may require what is called an acclimation certificate that is available here:

Extream Weather Conditions

Extreme weather guidelines will apply for animals traveling as checked baggage. Cargo shipment of any live animal may not be permitted when the temperature is forecast to exceed 85 degrees Fahrenheit at any point in the animal's journey.

Summer Restrictions—May 15 through September 15

Pets cannot be checked as baggage on Delta and Aeromexico operated flights.

Pets may be shipped as cargo. See below for year-round temperature restrictions including live birds and snub-nosed breeds.

Prices for shipping pets as cargo are different from shipping pets as baggage. And, cargo locations may not be located in the airport terminal, so be sure to contact 1-888-SENDPET (736-3738) for details.
